SPICE UP YOUR CHRISTMAS

Father Christmas drinking a glass of Tote Rum

The holiday buzz is around the corner, and with it comes heaps of good food and drinks. But if you're a bit tired of the usual suspects, why not spice up your Christmas with some rum? Think about it – opening those new rum bottles as you dive into these recipes adds a bit of excitement to the festivities (and an excuse for another drink).

1. Hot buttered rum

First up is a classic. It's the ultimate cozy drink, combining the smooth richness of butter with the warmth of rum and a dash of festive spices. This winter drink is like a comforting hug, ideal for sipping (or guzzling if need be) on those chilly nights that seem all too regular this year.

Ingredients

1 tbsp soft light brown sugar, 1 tsp ground cinnamon, ½ tsp ground nutmeg, 100 ml Toti P.N.Q. Spiced Rum, 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted, 2 cinnamon sticks for serving.

Method

Mix together the sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a small bowl. Gradually blend in the rum and melted butter, stirring until well combined. Divvy up this delightful mix between two small (heatproof) glasses. Pour in 100ml of boiling water into each glass, give it a good stir, and add a cinnamon stick for that final touch of garnish.

 2. The White Christmas Martini

If you, like Bing Crosby, are dreaming of a white Christmas, then this cocktail is the ultimate match for you! It's a fantastic standalone drink that perfectly complements your holiday vibes, adding an air of elegance and a touch of festive fun to your drinks selection.

Ingredients

Juice of 1 lime, 8 mint leaves, 1 tbsp sugar, 2 tbsp Toti Famous Five White Rum, 1/4 cup coconut milk, sparkling water for topping.

Method

Crush lime juice, sugar, and mint leaves in a glass until the leaves break down, then fill the glass halfway with ice. In a blender, mix white rum and coconut milk until smooth. Pour this blend over the ice and stir well. Finish by topping it off with sparkling water, mint, and a sprinkle of pomegranate or dried cranberries for an extra Christmassy vibe.

3. Mulled Rum

Have you had your fill of the usual mulled wine at every gathering this season? It might be time to shake things up a bit! Enter Mulled Rum—an equally delightful and refreshingly different option that promises to fill your home with the most Christmassy aroma imaginable.

Ingredients

30 ml of Toti Cask Reserve Dark Rum, 300 ml of (ideally pressed) apple juice, a pinch of nutmeg, a small cinnamon stick, 3 cloves, half an orange, ½  a lemon, 1 slice of orange, and 1 tsp honey.

Method

Mix the juice of the orange, lemon, and the apple juice. Simmer with the spices, then let it infuse for 30 minutes to 3 hours. Remove the spices, reheat, add rum and honey. Pour, garnish with orange, and enjoy!
